Teachers

The Save Organic Scraps program is a comprehensive recycling program in almost every school in Clark County. Clark County Environmental Services Department wants to ensure the SOS’s program success by providing free resources to teachers. The program provides teachers with tools to increase awareness and knowledge of environmental and sustainability education. Clark County Environmental Services provides a free assembly for grades K-8 focused around the SOS program and sustainability.

In addition we have developed different lessons series around waste reduction, recycling, and composting. You can deliver the lessons in your classroom or request for us to provide them in your classroom. Clark County Environmental Services also provides all schools with recycling containers and other resources to be utilized towards waste reduction, recycling, and composting.

SOS Curriculum

Clark County staff is avalible to teach the lesson series in your classrooms or the curriculum is avalible for you to use. Please contact us for more information. There are four lessons in each curriculum series and each lesson is 50 minutes.

Lesson Descriptions

SOS Intro Activity

This activity serves as an “ice breaker” to get students thinking and talking about recycling and composting at school. It can be used as an introduction to the SOS Composting Program in the school and to the Clark County SOS Lesson Plan Sets.

Worm Bins

Students will get close to worms to learn more about composting. Students will learn about worm anatomy and have a chance to make a bin for the classroom and learn how to maintain it.

Rethinking Throw Away

Students will learn where all their ‘stuff’ comes from and the natural resources used to make it. Students will examine the role that waste reduction plays in natural resource conservation and the impact they can make by being conscious consumers.

Is it Really Trash?

Students will learn how waste has been handled in the past and how our trash can define our culture. Students will audit the garbage collected at the school and perform a waste audit.

Trash to Treasure

Students will identify and use a variety of reusable, non-reusable, and recycled materials to create recycled art. Students will create a recycled art project, develop an artist statement, and display it around the school.

SOS Resources

Clark County Environmental Services has a variety of additional resources for schools to access to enhance students knowledge of resource conservation, waste reduction and recycling, composting, and sustainability. All resources are provided for FREE to schools in Clark County. Clark County can provide free copies to your school of the curriculum, Let’s Compost workbook, and funding for the field trip to the transfer station.
